I have to ask myself is reform micro-managing and I would agree it is. Last night at Peru Township monthly meeting Peru Township Supervisor Hocking accused the Township Trustees of micro-managing him. I believe as an community we elected our trustees to be steward's of our tax dollars and that is what we expect from them. What surprises me more and more how trustees moving to bring lower taxes, less government and more transparency to our township are getting so much back lash from the Democratic Town Supervisor. Things have changed at Peru Township and its time to move forward from the way things were over the last 30 years where 95% of things presented were moved forward by full Democratic Town Board.
As expected the Township Board moved forward with a Township website hiring IV Designs with a vote of 4-0-1 with Supervisor Hocking voting present which is usually reserved in the event of a conflict of interest but not sure why he selected to vote present. This is a huge step moving forward in transparency. I look forward to seeing this site up and running over the next few months.
The Township Trustees voted 5-0 to assist with funding a scholarship for $500 in the name of Gary Eccles to LP High School. I think this a nice gesture considering Gary fought many fires in Peru Township and what a nice way to honor him.
During officer reports Assessor Bierderstedt stated any trustee or any one that wants to know what his job duties are can stop by his office including me. I plan to just do that and look forward to meeting with him to hear what his job duties entail. I have nothing against Mr. Biederstedt and I have been always open to hearing what the other side has to say.
Finally in new business Trustee Mitchell asked for a monthly report of General Assistance in Peru Township. How many applications were filed, how many were accepted and how many rejected. Trustee Mitchell stated he believed this was important information and Trustee Rigby also stated he had a voter ask him for the same numbers. Supervisor Hocking stated he wrote the information down but felt he was being micro-managed by Trustees. Trustee Bernabei jumped in and stated the board is active and not as complacent and they would have to collaborate as a board to move forward and accept the fact that new ideas are coming forward. Trustee Studer stated he wanted to find the appropriate way to add things to the agenda.
As an observer I expect this year's budget process to be lengthy and I sure hope to see a decrease in the budget and levy for our citizens. Last year's budget meeting lasted about 22 minutes, the next one will be much different.
